On the weekend I had some farewell drinks at the Newmarket Hotel (which I reviewed in more detail here), which proved to be a perfect venue. New York is going to have some über-trendy restaurants obviously, but Melbourne holds its own more than admirably. Plus, the pork roast was AH-MAY-ZING. Seriously. You MUST try it. Our waiter was up-selling us left, right, and centre, and we couldn't have cared less.
