Sunshine (or fish oil) jars. Take your pick.

As some of you may know, I suffer from myopia or shortsightedness. My latest eye test has me sitting at -8.00 on both eyes, with a dose of astigmastim thrown in just for good luck.

Over the last 18 months this has been compounded by a sudden allergy to contact lenses. For many years my shortsightedness didn't bother me remotely, because I was always wearing contacts. After ten years of this though, my eyes have thrown in the towel. I've developed GPC, a dramatic-sounding condition which basically means I can no longer wear contact lenses for extended periods.

I love my glasses, but they aren't great for sport, so I'm investigating laser surgery options for later this year once I can prove my prescription is stable.

In the meantime, I've been told to take fish oil tablets six times a day (to increase moisture levels in my eyes) and apply special eye drops. I'm not the most obedient of patients and I usually forget both of these instructions. Having one giant bottle of capsules sitting in my room hasn't helped, so yesterday I dropped into the Chef's Hat in South Melbourne and purchased three small jam jars.

Filled up with golden yellow omega 3 fish oil tablets, they look like those sun jars you find in novelty stores. Quite pretty, don't you think? I'll keep one at work, one in the kitchen, and one in my room. Hopefully keeping them on display will remind me to take one after each meal.

I'm justifying the $4.40 price tag on the jars by the high quality seal on the lids. You need the capsules to be stored in an air-tight container away from moisture, otherwise they go all soggy and you risk them exploding in your mouth. Yuck.

Do you take vitamins or supplements regularly?

If you have bad eyesight do you prefer wearing contacts or glasses?

  1. My goodness!! GPC and -8!! I'm -5 but since I haven't been able to wear contacts for extended periods I've stuck to glasses all this time. I prefer glasses because I look better with it than without (lol!). As for supplements I take Zinc (to harden my soft nails), Evening Primrose (for dermatitis) and Multi's. But it sounds like I need to take Fish Oil too!
